What is Milu?
Milu is a product scanning app for food and cosmetics, currently focused on the Japanese market. Milu lets you scan product barcodes and package labels, look up nutrition and ingredient information, and view informational scores. Milu is in private beta.
This website
When you join the private beta on this page, we store your email address and a simple source label that tells us where the signup came from. Nothing else is collected on this website.
We use your email address only to contact you about beta access and Milu updates. We do not sell it and we do not share it for advertising.
Data the app collects
Account data. Email address, hashed password or third-party auth token, account creation date and last login.
Barcode scans and search. Barcodes scanned, product names searched, whether a product was found, and scan timestamps. We do not build profiles of your dietary habits beyond what is needed for scan history and product lookup.
Product photos and package images. When you use the camera to scan a product label, Milu may capture a photo of the front packaging or the nutrition and ingredient label. These images are used for text extraction and catalog review. Milu scans product packaging, not people. Please avoid uploading images that contain personal information such as receipts, names, addresses, or faces.
Extracted label text. Label photos are sent to a text recognition service. Extracted text may be saved as product evidence for review.
Product evidence and contributions. Ingredient text, nutrition figures, product name and brand, and label photos you submit are stored as product evidence linked to the product barcode.
Device and technical logs. Device type, OS version, app version, and error messages for bug diagnosis. These do not contain label photo content.
Camera permission
Milu requests camera access to scan product barcodes and package labels. The camera is only active while you are using the scan feature. Milu does not access your camera in the background and does not scan faces or people.
Third-party services
Open Food Facts. Open community food database (openfoodfacts.org, ODbL licensed). Milu does not control the accuracy of community data.
Open Beauty Facts. Open community cosmetics database (openbeautyfacts.org, ODbL licensed).
Text recognition provider. A third-party service extracts text from label photos. The provider will be named before public launch, with a data processing agreement in place.
Backend and hosting providers. Used for the database, authentication, and serving this website. Providers will be named before public launch.
Email provider. Used to send the beta confirmation email and beta updates.

Accepted product evidence: kept while the product is in Milu's catalog.
Rejected raw images and evidence: deleted after a period to be confirmed before public launch.
Account data: kept until account deletion.

Deletion and contact
To be removed from the beta list, or to request deletion of your account or submitted data, contact contact@hello-milu.com. We aim to respond within 30 days. Accepted product evidence added to the shared catalog may be kept in anonymized form.
Children and minors
Milu is not intended for children under 13, or under 16 where local law requires it. We do not knowingly collect data from minors. Contact us if you believe a minor has submitted data.
Legal review note
This policy is a draft prepared for the beta. It will be reviewed by a qualified legal professional before Milu opens to the general public. Compliance with Japan APPI, EU GDPR, and other applicable regulations will be confirmed before public launch.
